The Bronx

Tomorrow I start a photo project with my friend Karen, who lives in Yorkshire, England.  Every day we will post a “photo of the day”, for the entire month of March.  We did the same thing a few years ago, before either of us were on social media, and simply e-mailed the photos to each other.

Now we’ll be posting on line, but I’ve decided to post them here as well, one a day every day for a month.

Today is still February, but I’m kicking off early with more than one photo – of the Bronx.

The Bronx is the only NYC borough whose name is almost always prefaced with “the”;   Manhattan, Brooklyn, Queens, Staten Island and the Bronx.    The reason for this, as the story goes, is that at one time most of the land to the north of Manhattan was owned by the Bronx family.   Once a year they held a massive party and invited all their family, friends,  employees.   Going to the Bronx’ party was quite the status symbol.   At one point it became known simply as going to the Bronx.

And it stuck.

Even if this isn’t completely true (I’ve never bothered to verify it) it makes a great story.

Parts of the Bronx today are kind of a throwback to a New York where graffiti still ruled the streets, and bodegas outnumbered chain stores at least 5 to 1.

But with far less crime.

The streets and buildings and people have a distinct character that lend themselves to photos with “flavor”.
