Drowning in slush

Punxsatawney Phil and Staten Island Chuck both agreed today that Spring will come early.  They did this by not seeing their shadows.   Normally I don’t pay too much attention to the prognostications of these heralded groundhogs (well, I don’t really know how heralded ‘Chuck’ is – seems like he’s kind of riding on Phil’s coattails), but this year we are all hoping they know something we don’t.  Because when I look out the windows, what I see is 15 foot piles of snow and ice and streets running with slush and meltwater, most of which cannot go into the sewers because they are blocked by the piles of snow.  Which means many of the corners have about 12-18 inches of water at them.  Which makes crossing the street sort of challenging in a mucky, wow I really hate this weather kind of way.

None of this has anything to do with learning.  (Except that we’ve learned how much we don’t want anymore snow this year.)   Sitting here tonight, my mind was a blank except for snarky thoughts about $5000 Canon SLR cameras given as presents to people who are not me.    And parents who seem to have no trouble going off for a weekend or a week to some quiet warm location while their kids happily stay with grandparents or friends.    And people who rip out all the walls in an apartment and custom design everything so that it is exactly to their tastes.   Aren’t we supposed to be in a recession?
